| U.S. Consul General Brian L. Goldbeck made his first official visit to Dongguan on October 16 to consult with key government and business leaders. Dongguan Mayor Li Yuquan Poly solar panel met with the guests and expressed, on behalf of Dongguan city, the appreciation to foreign investors for their contribution toward the city's development. During his meeting with the Mayor, Consul General Goldbeck described his visit as "a visit to make stronger ties between Dongguan Dish Towel and the United States in concerning of economic, cultural and education exchanges." Consul General Goldbeck also showed great interest to Dongguan's "dual-transferring" policies. According to Mayor Li, "dual-transferring" is a policy to shift the city's economy from relying on proccesing and trade to a more hi-tech one, by encouraging labour-intensive enterprises in Dongguan to transfer their plants to other developing cities in Guangdong Province; meanwhile the surplus rural labour in these regions are encouraged to work in Dongguan. Li said more than 100 billion RMB of investments had been transferred to other developing cities in Guangdong Province, adding an important impetus to the economic development in these regions; and Dongguan's contribution has created in excess of 500 thousand job opportunities for the labour force from these regions. Consul General Goldbeck's other meetings included the Dongguan City Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment Chairman Chu Kwok Kai and Honorary Chairman Eddie Leung; and some presidents of foreign-funded enterprises. Reflecting on his trip, Mr. Goldbeck concluded: "Expanding business and cultural contacts are part of President Obama's goal of building a positive, comprehensive and constructive relationship between the United States and China. Dongguan demonstrates the potential of this partnership. We encourage other Chinese and U.S. business and government organizations to further their relationships. The United States and Dongguan share many mutual interests and concerns, and we see excellent opportunities for working together on many issues. Examples of these issues are: tourism, economic development and trade, intellectual property protection, and environmental protection, to name a few common concerns. Given Dongguan's impressive development and award-winning environment." |
